MailerLite Double Opt-In: Check the Complete Signup Journey

Ad disclosure: we may earn a commission if you buy through links in this guide. How we are funded.

MailerLite double opt-in asks someone to confirm their email signup before becoming an active subscriber. Check the complete journey from the actual form to the confirmation message and onward to the promised content, rather than judging success by a thank-you screen alone.

Check the form and the editing limit

New MailerLite forms have double opt-in enabled by default. Inspect the switch in the form’s Overview. The Double opt-in tab contains the confirmation message and confirmation thank-you page; editing the confirmation email requires a paid plan. Form confirmation setup.

Illustrative example: a consultancy offers a monthly operations newsletter through a resources page. Write down the promise in plain language: what arrives, how often and what a new reader should do next. Keep confirmation wording consistent with that promise. Do not make a reader guess whether the next message is a booking request, a newsletter or a download.

Review the signup page itself as a separate part of the journey. Our MailerLite landing pages guide covers page setup; the present guide focuses on confirmation. If several pages invite different audiences, record which form each page actually uses before changing account-wide settings.

Treat integrations as a separate signup route

For API and integration signups, open Account settings → Subscribe settings and enable Double opt-in for API and integrations. API signups use a shared confirmation email, so use wording that makes sense across the connected entry points. API confirmation settings.

For the consultancy, a webinar integration and a newsletter form may describe different offers. Inventory both routes and note where their confirmation is configured. Avoid changing the shared message for one campaign without checking the others. Keep the operational owner of each connection in the inventory so later troubleshooting starts with the correct person.

Distinguish two kinds of WordPress form

MailerLite’s WordPress guide distinguishes forms created inside MailerLite from custom forms created in the WordPress plugin. App-created forms use their MailerLite form settings. For plugin-created custom forms, open MailerLite → Settings in WordPress and enable Double opt-in; this applies across those custom forms. WordPress confirmation configuration.

Inspect the form embedded on the public page instead of inferring its origin from the page design. Record whether it was created in the app, plugin or another service. Rehearse on the same page and route visitors will use. A successful check on a different form does not establish how this one behaves.

Keep confirmation separate from the welcome journey

Do not treat a confirmation request as the promised newsletter or welcome message. Map the sequence on paper: the reader submits, receives a request, confirms and then reaches the appropriate content. Our MailerLite welcome automation guide covers the follow-up workflow.

With double opt-in across several forms, a Completes a Form automation runs for the form where confirmation occurs. MailerLite recommends group-based triggers when multiple form triggers would otherwise cause inconsistent entry. Multiple-form automation behaviour.

For the consultancy, choose the group around the reader’s stated interest and keep the welcome message relevant to it. Document what should happen when someone enters through two forms. Avoid promising two separate welcome sequences unless the configured journey actually supports that expectation. Start with a simple route that a colleague can explain.

Investigate an unconfirmed record in order

A person who has not clicked the confirmation link remains Unconfirmed. Check the sender address under the confirmation email settings: MailerLite says an invalid sender can prevent sending. Also inspect message variables for spaces, incorrect brackets or formatting problems. Confirmation delivery troubleshooting.

Use a fresh controlled test address and note the route, time, resulting status and message received. Existing subscribers can behave differently depending on their status and entry method. Keep any real subscriber unchanged while diagnosing the configuration. Confirm what actually arrived before deciding a missing welcome message is an automation failure.

Rehearse before asking readers to use it

Inspect the message on a phone, follow the confirmation link and check the resulting page. Confirm that the next content matches the offer and that the reader can recognise the sender. These are suggested checks, not results from testing a MailerLite account. Record the setup and review it again after replacing forms, integrations or campaign destinations.
