Jotform vs Typeform: Choose by Responses, Payments and Form Workflow

Ad disclosure: we may earn a commission if you buy through links in this guide. How we are funded.

Jotform is a sensible first trial for operational forms involving uploads, payments and varied information. Typeform deserves a close look for a focused questionnaire or lead-qualification journey where the respondent’s experience is central. Choose using the completed workflow and monthly usage, rather than assuming a particular visual style belongs to only one product.

Online form sheets, selection controls and collected responses

A form builder must work for two people: the visitor supplying information and the colleague doing something with it. An attractive questionnaire that exports unusable data can create as much work as an awkward form that customers abandon.

The free plans are useful for different trials

Limit or feature Jotform Starter Typeform Free
Forms Five active forms Unlimited forms
Monthly submissions 100 across the account Ten across the account
Other limit to inspect Upload storage and payment submissions Total responses across every form
Useful initial trial Operational intake or a small payment form Question flow, logic and presentation

These allowances are documented in Jotform’s Free plan guide and Typeform’s Free plan guide. Typeform explicitly notes that it experiments with plans, so confirm the offer shown in your own account before relying on a specific allowance.

For a live lead form expected to receive dozens of enquiries a month, a ten-response allowance is a trial constraint rather than a comfortable operating margin. Conversely, a business that needs six separate active Jotform forms should check the next tier even if it expects very few submissions.

Compare the right layouts

Typeform is associated with a focused question-by-question experience, but Jotform also provides a Card layout. Its Classic layout supports grouping questions, while Cards presents questions individually. Some fields work in one layout and not the other. Jotform’s layout documentation.

That means “conversational versus traditional” is too crude a buying rule. Test whether your customer benefits from seeing the entire task or being guided through smaller steps. A short discovery questionnaire and a long equipment specification are different jobs.

For an illustrative design agency, a new-project questionnaire might start with project type, then reveal different questions for a website or a branding commission. The purpose is to collect a brief a designer can act on. Compare the clarity of the questions, branching and final handover in both products; do not treat a decorative welcome screen as proof of a better result.

Count submissions, stored records and payments separately

Jotform Starter lists 100MB of upload space, storage for 500 submissions and ten monthly payment submissions. Those constraints are separate from the 100 monthly submission allowance. A busy payment form or a few large uploads can therefore reach a limit before ordinary enquiry volume does. Jotform Free usage limits.

Typeform pools response usage across all forms in an account. The allowance resets monthly even on an annual subscription, and unused responses do not roll over. Five forms do not each receive a separate copy of your plan’s response allowance. Typeform response rules.

Consider a separate illustrative workshop business collecting 60 enquiries and 12 paid registrations during a month. Jotform’s headline submission allowance could appear sufficient, while the payment-submission allowance would not cover those registrations. Typeform Free would also be too small for that workload. This is why the quote should start with what people submit, rather than just the number of forms you want to build.

Look at the first paid plan that completes the job

Jotform’s paid tiers are Bronze, Silver, Gold and Enterprise. The pricing guide describes increased quotas and removal of Jotform branding on paid plans. It also identifies Enterprise as its multiuser option. Check whether colleagues need to edit and manage forms together, rather than merely receive the results. Jotform pricing and plan explanation.

Typeform’s current core plan comparison lists Basic with 100 monthly responses and one user, and Plus with 1,000 responses and three users. Plus also removes Typeform branding. Those are more useful starting points than assuming the least expensive plan includes your desired branding and team access. Typeform plan comparison.

Both products offer monthly and annual subscriptions. For a UK budget, compare the total annual commitment, selected currency, taxes and any additional response or payment-service charges. Confirm the actual checkout offer: Typeform’s published pricing can vary, and a promotional monthly equivalent is not necessarily a monthly contract.

Test what happens after submission

Start with the destination of the information. If a submitted form must create a customer record, arrange a callback or start a delivery process, write down which fields and statuses are required. A generic integration badge does not confirm that every field reaches the correct place.

Use our free CRM guide if you need somewhere to manage enquiries after collection. For a broader research questionnaire rather than a business intake form, the survey software comparison covers other options.

Try an export before committing. Check whether each response has a stable identifier, whether multiple selections remain understandable and how uploaded files are retrieved. Ask the eventual recipient to use the exported result, not just glance at the form preview.

A practical form acceptance checklist

  1. Use realistic responses. Include a long company name, a UK postcode, an international telephone number and a missing optional answer.
  2. Follow every branch. Confirm that irrelevant questions disappear without removing information needed for the final decision.
  3. Use a phone and keyboard. Check labels, errors, navigation and how easily someone can correct an earlier answer.
  4. Verify the handover. Inspect the email notification, exported record and any connected business system.
  5. Test payment separately if needed. Confirm currency, payment status and what your staff do when payment is incomplete.
  6. Document the limits. Record expected monthly responses, file storage, payments and the person responsible for watching usage.

Keep the first form small. Every unnecessary question creates more work for the respondent and another piece of information for your team to manage. A carefully chosen five-question brief can be more useful than a template containing every available field.

Which one should you choose?

Trial Jotform first when your main challenge is collecting operational information and handling the resulting work within predictable quotas. Trial Typeform when a focused questionnaire and its branding, logic and response experience are the main requirements. Keep whichever produces complete, usable submissions for the person who follows them up, at the response volume and team size you actually need.
